I just started experiencing an issue where I can no longer create a line originating from shape group.

Prior to this issue, I had several shapes within a “group”, and would click on that shape group to get the little purple circle to show up, then drag that to another shape to create/connect the line.  This has never been an issue before.

However, when I click on that shape group now, the purple circle never appears.  If I click on a single, ungrouped shape, the circle appears, and I can create lines just fine.  Also, if I ungroup the group, I can connect lines from the individual shapes that were within that group.  But I can no longer draw a line from the group itself.

I tried looking for settings that might control this (i.e.  View / Enable Line Connections), but couldn’t find anything that might have changed this behavior.

Is there a setting to get this working again?  Or is this possibly some sort of bug?

Would you be willing to post a share link (view permissions only) so we can see the problem?

Hi @Justin S101, thank you for posting in the Lucid community!

Could you try opening your document in a private or incognito window to help us narrow down the potential cause? Could you also try connecting to a different network or disconnecting from your VPN (if applicable)? Sometimes account performance issues can be related to internet security/speed or browser issues. These steps will help us eliminate that possibility. For help with opening an incognito window, please see this community post.

If those don’t resolve the problem, can you please send the following information so I can take a closer look?

  • A screenshot or screen recording of the issue.
  • A screenshot of the associated Javascript Console output after reproducing the issue. You can open your Javascript Console by pressing Ctrl+Shift+J (if your computer is a Windows/Linux) OR Cmd+Opt+J (if your computer is a Mac).

Thanks in advance for your help and patience!

Still experiencing this issue, but didn’t have time to get you the requested info until now.  Please see the attached screen recording.

Also tried:

  • Incognito Mode (Chrome)
  • Firefox
  • Different network
  • No VPN

The JS Console shows some errors when loading LucidChart.  If needed, I can provide more than just the screenshot, but here’s this for now:

Hi @Justin S101, thank you so much for sending back this detailed information! I apologize for the delayed response as I was verifying internally with the development team.

If you double click into the group and select a shape, are the line buds any easier to grab as shown below?

Unfortunately, I’ve confirmed that this is intended behavior. The development team confirmed that hovering over grouped items won’t trigger the new line circles to appear. However, they’re very interested in your feedback and they have this filed as a potential feature change. I’ve shared your comments on this thread with the team, but if you would like to leave official product feedback, I would recommend creating an idea that will go into the Product Feedback space of this community.

For more information about how we manage feedback in this community, please take a look at this post:

I am truly sorry that I don’t have more of a solution for you at this time and I apologize for any inconvenience this causes. Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Just voicing my frustrations here - this should not be categorized as a “feature change”.   This capability used to work exactly as I described, but just stopped working.  Please treat this as the “bug fix” that it is, and not a feature request.

It may sound ridiculous, but I based my templates and nearly all of my flowcharts on this capability.   Nearly all of the custom shapes I created are grouped shapes, which means adding lines is now a multi-step process, many times throughout a single document, instead of a single click like it used to be.

At least for me, this is more of just an inconvenience.   If it means anything at all, I’ve pretty much stopped using Lucid entirely, solely because of this issue.  I check back in periodically to see if it’s been fixed, but no luck.  I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’d bet I’m not the only one.

Also, I found another issue posted in this community, and thought I’d add it here for reference:

As requested, I added a separate “idea” post:

Hi @Justin S101, thank you for adding to this thread. I apologize for any inconvenience here and can certainly understand why this is important to you.

Thank you for leaving that feedback. I’ve raised this again internally to the proper teams.

While the experience with grouped shapes does differ, and I understand that this may not be exactly what you’re hoping for, you can double-click on a grouped shape to pull up the blue connection nodes. Does this work on your end?

@Ambar D

Double-clicking the group and adding a line to an individual shape DOES work to create the line.  However, the line can’t attach to anything outside of that group.

So, in your example above, if I double click on the “Process/Process” group, then create a line from one of those shapes, over to the solo Process shape, it won’t connect to it.  At best, I can sometimes make it look like it’s connected.  But, if I then move the solo Process shape to a different position on the canvas, the line doesn’t come with it.  Even if I exit out of group-edit mode, I still can’t even manually connect that line to another shape.

The only way that seems to work now, is to use the “line” component from the shape menu on the left.  I need to drag a new line onto the canvas, then manually connect each endpoint to where it’s supposed to go.  Sure, it works - but it’s certainly a step backward on functionality.

Hi @Justin S101, thanks for that additional context. I can certainly understand why it would be important to add that line connection outside of the grouping of shapes.

Thank you again for sharing your feedback, both within this thread and the one below. I’ve shared your feedback on this with the proper teams.
